Bling the Band
A cranial helmet can be a big part of a baby's daily life, so some families choose to decorate it.
Always check with your orthotist before decorating. The helmet may have specific areas that need to remain visible for skin monitoring, incision monitoring, ventilation, or fit.
Ideas include:
- removable decals
- favorite animals
- flowers
- dinosaurs
- sports themes
- initials or names
- seasonal designs
- colorful patterns
Before decorating:
Ask your orthotist what materials are safe for your baby's specific helmet.
Do not:
- cover ventilation holes
- cover the surgical incision or areas that need monitoring
- add thick materials that change the fit
- create new pressure points
- interfere with trimlines
- permanently alter the helmet without approval
The decoration should never interfere with the medical purpose of the orthosis.
The goal is a helmet that is safe, functional, comfortable and maybe a little fun.Your baby's helmet is a medical device—but that doesn't mean it can't have some personality!
Methods include:
- Stickers
- Vinyl designs
- Paintings
